WHAT'S ON IN THE COMMUNITY

Inspector Michael Smith

For those who don't know Inspector Smith, he played an active part in the South Forum. Inspector Smith will no longer be working where he can be a part of the South Forum.  So here is a message from Inspector Michael Smith ' I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on this sector and meeting people like the ones who attend the forum has certainly been a highlight'.  The South forum wish him well in his new job.

STPCT logoSouth Healthy City – Planning Day

They would like to invite you to the next meeting of the South Healthy Cities Group, details as follows:

Location: St Mary and St Peter’s Community Project, Springwell Road, Sunderland, SR3 4DY

Date: 7th November 2006

Time: 9.30am – 1pm (buffet lunch included)

The meeting will draw on information on health across the South area, and use that information to help us refine our priorities and work areas for both South Healthy Cities and the South Locality Team more generally. There will not therefore be the usual business agenda for the event. We welcome the involvement of as many Group members as possible to help us to do this.

I would appreciate it if you could confirm your attendance on the day by contacting David Bailey, Community Health Development Worker, on 0191 553 6825 or at david.bailey@suntpct.nhs.uk.

If you would like to know more about the day itself, please contact me directly on 0191 553 6894 or at paul.j.gray@suntpct.nhs.uk.

FUNDING INFORMATION

Sunderland City LogoAction for Community Environments (ACE21) grant

Sunderland City Council is again making six community grants available, each worth £250; to promote environmental action at the community level.  For the past 4 years, Action for Community Environmental grants (ACE21) have been awarded to community groups and local schools who have demonstrated that their environmental projects are sustainable and are of benefit to the wider community.   This year we require that all applications address the central theme of "Climate Change and Energy".  This is because Sunderland City Council is in the process of developing and Action Plan to tackle the causes and effects of Climate Change and will be launching a City-wide campaign on Climate Change in Spring 2007.   Closing Date: Friday 24th November 2006. Contact Kathryn Warrington Planning Policy, Development and Regeneration Services at the Civic Centre (0191) 520 5555.

SERVICES

Carers centre logoAre you a Carer?

Do you look after a family member, partner, friend or neighbour who is ill, disabled or frail and is the care you provide unpaid? If you answered ‘yes’ you are a carer!

The Carers’ Centre has been advising and supporting carers in Sunderland since 1994. It offers a friendly, free and confidential service. The level of support a carer can receive from the centre is totally dependant on the individual and is at the wishes of the carer themselves. Maeve Cuthbertson is the Development Worker looking after carers in your area. Maeve can arrange home visits if carers are unable to visit the centre on Toward Road opposite Mowbray Park. The following type of help is available:

· Information & advice
· Support at meetings with social workers and health professionals
· Support at groups where carers can meet others in a similar situation
· Courses on many relevant subjects
· Social activities to give carers a break
· Newsletter posted to carers every two months
· Gives you a ‘voice’ so you can influence local and regional services

Maeve can be contacted directly on 0191 5673232 if you have any more questions about the support available. We will include a photograph of Maeve in our next newsletter and give some details of the types of support groups the Carers’ Centre can offer.  Website www.sunderland.nhs.uk/carers

This email is distributed to all South Forum Members in the South area. Feel free to forward this to friends and colleagues with their permission.
